Background of the Study
Religious practices have long played a significant role in shaping cultural identity and preserving heritage. In Ado Ekiti, religious institutions and rituals are integral to maintaining traditional values, customs, and community cohesion (Olatunde, 2023). These practices provide a framework through which cultural narratives are passed from one generation to the next, ensuring the continuity of indigenous traditions. However, rapid modernization and external religious influences challenge the authenticity of these practices, leading to a gradual erosion of cultural heritage (Adegoke, 2024). Recent studies indicate that when religious practices are aligned with cultural preservation efforts, they can serve as powerful tools for sustaining heritage (Ajayi, 2025). This study investigates how religious practices in Ado Ekiti contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage, examining rituals, community events, and the role of religious institutions in maintaining traditional values.
Statement of the Problem
In Ado Ekiti, the role of religious practices in preserving cultural heritage is increasingly challenged by modern influences and external religious trends (Olatunde, 2023). The dilution of traditional rituals and the adoption of new practices have raised concerns about the loss of indigenous cultural values (Adegoke, 2024). Despite the recognized importance of religion in heritage preservation, there is limited research on its effectiveness in maintaining cultural continuity. This study seeks to examine the influence of religious practices on cultural heritage preservation and identify strategies to strengthen their role (Ajayi, 2025).
